The 9 biggest problems with DALL-E
Although there have been significant advances since its initial launch, DALL-E is still not perfect. The art creation tool has many problems to overcome, many of which become more apparent with regular use. Inconsistencies and incorrect sizes are just a few examples.
1. Still can’t write the text correctly
While AI can’t write text in images very well, after trying dozens of AI art creation tools, DALL-E is one of the worst options in this regard. In general, you will be successful with simple requests, but as you can see below, the software still has difficulty writing the accent for the word “Café”.
You’ll also notice that DALL-E doesn’t produce legible text for street signs and similar objects.
2. Do not resize images when requested
DALL-E understands the need to create images quite well, but cannot change the size when required. For example, the author of the article asked the software multiple times to resize images for different blogs; but each time, DALL-E just recreates the image.
Luckily, cropping and resizing images is quite simple. Many free tools, like Canva, allow you to do this. However, it would be nice if it could be done without relying on third-party software.
3. Cannot create realistic images
The DALL-E doesn’t have too many problems with depth of field, but it’s pretty bad at creating realistic images. For example, the author first asked the AI to create an image of a golden retriever in the mountains below (without specifying what type of image it was).
Although beautiful, it is clear that the photo was created using AI. So then the author asked DALL-E to make it more photorealistic. however, the result looks even more fake (even a bit scary).
Using photo-realistic custom GPT is useful, but you need a premium subscription to access it. If not, you can look to many AI artwork creation tools that produce photo-realistic results like Adobe Firefly.
4. Software doesn’t listen when you tell it not to do something
One way to write better prompts in Midjourney, ChatGPT, and other AI tools is to say what you don’t want the software to do. In many cases, doing so will yield better results. However, DALL-E is an exception.
On many occasions, the author asked DALL-E not to include certain elements in his photos. However, despite this, the tool still adds them. Sometimes recreating the image will work, but it’s better not to do this.
On the contrary, you will rarely encounter this problem when using Adobe Firefly.
5. Inconsistency in some areas
Many AI artwork creation tools have weaknesses; For example, when testing Photo AI, it was particularly bad at creating hands. DALL-E is also at fault with inconsistencies in many areas.
While DALL-E is great at creating images in general, it’s not always good at creating images of people holding objects. In addition, this software is also poor at creating computer screens. Usually it gives you a random set of shapes. Telling the software to turn off the computer screen can sometimes help.
6. Image style is inconsistent
DALL-E can produce several types of images; you can create AI art that looks like paintings and also create images that look more 3D. However, this variety in image creation can sometimes lead to inconsistent styles.
When asking DALL-E to create an image, you must clearly state what you want. Otherwise, you might get anything random. This isn’t a problem if you’re just testing the app, but it is if you want a consistent style.
7. Artifact size
Making the objects in your photos look proportionate to their real life images is important if you care about photo accuracy. Unfortunately, DALL-E sometimes does not make objects look as expected. For example, if you ask the software to create an image of a person holding a phone in their hand, sometimes the phone will be too big.
Although I tried asking the software to create a wider angle for the image to solve the problem, this actually made the problem worse, making the final image look artificial. Trying out different DALL-E editing requests may work, but a solution to this problem has generally not been found.
8. DALL-E had difficulty creating external materials
At first glance, DALL-E will be a great way to create personal calendars, birthday cards, phone wallpapers, etc. However, you will quickly discover that this software does not perform well. in this field.
For example, when trying to create a birthday card cover using DALL-E, the author of the article wanted to create an image in the application and then upload it to a service like Moonpig later. Unfortunately, the result was consistently a design with a birthday card in the photo.
If you really want to use DALL-E for these types of designs, you shouldn’t say you’re going to use it on a birthday card. Instead, specify what you want the program to do, then adjust the size later.
Note: It’s best to just create the image in DALL-E and add the text in another application.
9. Images do not represent many optional requirements
Sometimes you don’t know the specific AI design you want to use. Turning to generators and asking them to create multiple image variations can make sense in these cases. But according to personal experience, DALL-E is often quite “lazy” when users ask for many options.
In many cases, the photos you receive often look very similar. Therefore, you must request specifically. Creating one image after another is more effective than requiring multiple variations.
While many people generally still enjoy using DALL-E, the software is not perfect and you will eventually run into problems. For example, it’s not good at creating photorealistic images without custom GPT. Furthermore, this software often does not exclude elements that you do not want in the photo. However, you should still try DALL-E to see for yourself if you experience these problems.
